Beyond the Prize

Gregg L. Semenza, MD, PhD is the C. Michael Armstrong Professor of Cell Engineering and Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Semenza was an undergraduate at Harvard College, where he received an A.B. in Biology magna cum laude.

He received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Semenza trained as a pediatric intern and resident at Duke University Medical Center and as a postdoctoral fellow in medical genetics at Johns Hopkins. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences. 

Dr. Semenza’s lab discovered hypoxia-inducible factor 1, the founding member of a transcription factor family that controls the expression of thousands of genes in response to changes in oxygen availability, and plays key roles in development, physiology, and the pathogenesis of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Semenza was a recipient of the 2010 Canada Gairdner International Award, 2012 Lefoulon-Delalande Grand Prix, 2016 Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award and the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
